Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®
What if UnApproved ?
Understand Why It Was Rejected
PMI provides specific feedback when your CAPM® application is rejected. Carefully review it to identify the exact issues. Common reasons include:
Vague project descriptions: Objectives, your role, and outcomes were not clearly defined.
Operational tasks listed instead of project-related work: PMI expects involvement in project management activities, not just routine or administrative duties.
Incorrect terminology: Descriptions did not align with PMI’s project management framework and the five process groups — Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing.
Lack of detail on contributions: Your description did not clearly demonstrate how you supported or participated in project management tasks.
Audit issues: Missing, incomplete, or unverifiable documentation during the application review.
Revise and Rewrite Your Project Experience
Follow PMI format: Clearly outline each project’s objectives, your role, responsibilities, key deliverables, and measurable outcomes.
Use PMI language: Describe your tasks using standard project management terminology and link them to PMI’s five process groups — Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing.
Show your involvement: Use “I” statements to describe how you actively contributed to project management activities, decision-making, and supporting project delivery.
Choose meaningful experiences: Highlight projects where you played a substantive role in project tasks or supported project management processes, rather than listing routine or minor administrative duties.
Address an Audit Failure
Gather documents: Collect all certificates, transcripts, and any supporting evidence of your project management experience and education.
Contact verifiers: Inform supervisors, instructors, or colleagues who can verify your experience or education, so they are prepared if PMI contacts them.
Ensure consistency: Double-check that all details in your CAPM® application match your supporting documents and verifier information to avoid discrepancies during the review or audit process.
Resubmit the Corrected Application
Review thoroughly: Carefully check all sections of your CAPM® application for clarity, completeness, and accuracy.
Seek guidance (optional): Consider consulting a CAPM expert or using professional application review services for feedback to strengthen your submission.
Submit the revised version: Follow PMI’s official reapplication process after addressing all feedback and updating your application.
Understand the Consequences
Non-compliance: Failure to respond to a CAPM® audit within the specified timeframe may result in a one-year waiting period before you can reapply.
Fraudulent information: Providing false or misleading information in your CAPM application can lead to permanent disqualification from PMI certifications and exams.
