RISK Management Professional (RMP)®

What if failed ?

If you fail the PMI-RMP exam, you must wait 30 days before retaking it, and you are allowed up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period. To increase your chances of success on your next attempt, it’s important to carefully analyze your performance report and identify weak areas across the key risk domains—such as Risk Strategy and Planning, Risk Identification, Risk Analysis, Risk Response, and Monitoring & Reporting.

Based on your performance, revise your study plan to focus on those specific knowledge gaps. Deepen your understanding of PMI’s risk management processes, tools, and techniques by using a variety of study resources, including updated exam prep guides, online courses, practice tests, and flashcards. Practicing with full-length mock exams under timed conditions can significantly improve your exam readiness and time management.

Steps to take after failing

Wait and Recover:
After an unsuccessful attempt, wait at least 30 days before retaking the exam to recover mentally and refine your strategy. If you fail three times, you must wait one full year before reapplying for the PMI-RMP certification.

Analyze Your Exam Report:
Review PMI’s performance report to identify weak areas across the key risk management domains—Risk Strategy and Planning, Risk Identification, Risk Analysis, Risk Response, and Monitoring & Reporting.

Update Your Study Plan:
Develop a revised, targeted study plan based on your performance analysis. Avoid using the same preparation methods or materials that didn’t yield results in your previous attempts.

Focus on Weak Areas:
Dedicate additional study time to topics or domains where you scored lower. Use tools like domain-based study sheets, focused mock tests, and flashcards to track and measure your progress.

Practice with Mock Exams:
Take full-length mock exams regularly to familiarize yourself with the PMI-RMP exam format, question style, and timing. This will help you improve both accuracy and confidence.

Diversify Your Resources:
Use a combination of updated PMI-RMP prep materials—official PMI resources, online courses, exam simulators, study groups, and risk management reference guides—to strengthen your overall understanding.

Improve Time Management:
Simulate exam conditions and practice completing questions within time limits. This will help you stay calm and maintain steady pacing during the actual exam.

Adjust Your Mindset:
View failure as a learning opportunity, not a setback. Stay positive, disciplined, and persistent—many certified PMI-RMP professionals succeeded after one or more failed attempts.

Consider a Different Strategy:
If you’ve exhausted all three attempts and feel mentally drained, allow your eligibility period to expire and reapply later for a fresh set of three attempts. Although it may involve extra cost, this break can provide renewed focus and a higher chance of success.
